Hawaii Rental Car Insurance Guide
Everything you need to make an informed decision at the counter
Before you rent, check two things: your personal auto policy and your credit card's rental benefits. Many cover rental cars already — but coverage varies widely by card tier and vehicle class (credit card coverage typically excludes Specialty, Luxury, and SUV rentals). Confirm before you decline the rental company's own coverage.
Your Coverage Options
CDW / LDW
Collision/Loss Damage Waiver. Not technically insurance — the rental company agrees not to hold you liable for vehicle damage or theft, as long as you followed rental terms.
SLI
Supplemental Liability Insurance. Raises the rental company's minimum liability coverage — protects you if you injure someone or damage their property.
PAI
Personal Accident Insurance. Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident.
Gap Coverage
If the car is a total loss, standard insurance pays only its cash value — often less than what you owe. Example: a $20,000 rental is stolen, insurance pays $15,000 — you'd owe the $5,000 difference without gap coverage.
