Hawaii Rental Car Checklist: Debit Card Policies

What you need to know before reaching the rental counter

You can rent a car in Hawaii with a debit card — but every agency treats it a little differently. Rental companies view debit/cash payers as higher risk than credit card renters, so expect extra documentation, holds, and sometimes vehicle restrictions. Policies below reflect general company rules; always confirm specifics with your agency before arrival.

At a Glance: What Debit Card Renters Should Know

  • Return Flight Often required at Hawaii airport locations
  • Identification A second form of ID may be required
  • Credit Check Some companies may check your credit
  • Extra Funds A temporary authorization hold may reduce available funds

NEW ~ Dollar & Thrifty Special Debit Card Policy

Dollar and Thrifty have eliminated credit checks for debit card renters! Non-prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and Discover debit cards are accepted.

How Other Major Agencies Compare

General company policy — confirm specifics with your agency, as Hawaii locations may vary

Alamo

Accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover debit. Your license address must match your home address (active-duty military exempt). At airports, you'll need a return flight matching your rental dates — without one, a credit card with sufficient available credit plus a $300–$400 deposit may be required instead. Only a spouse or domestic partner can be added as a second driver.

National

Requires a return travel itinerary at airport locations, plus a license name and address that match your reservation. A security deposit of roughly $200–$500 typically applies, and a credit check may be run. Only a spouse or domestic partner can be added as a second driver.

Enterprise

Accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover debit. Deposit holds range from $200–$850 depending on location and vehicle class. Airport pickups require a return ticket; off-airport locations may ask for two proofs of current address matching your license (active-duty military exempt).

Hertz

Accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover debit as the security deposit. Renters must be 25 or older and book at least 24 hours ahead. Vehicles are limited to Compact through Full-size, a hold of up to $500 plus the estimated rental applies, and most branches run a credit check.

Avis

Accepts Visa and Mastercard debit (no Discover). Renters must be 25+ (18 in New York). The hold typically equals the estimated rental cost, but Premium vehicles are off-limits with a debit card. Some locations don't accept debit cards for pickup at all — confirm with your specific branch.

Budget

Places a hold on your account for the rental cost. Vehicle selection may be limited, and proof of a return itinerary is often requested — policies can vary meaningfully by location.

Standard Requirements for Most Major Agencies

Secondary Identification Required

Bring your driver's license plus one of: passport or military ID, photo ID membership card (Costco, Sam's Club), an additional credit/debit card in your name, a current utility bill matching your ID, or a round-trip flight/cruise itinerary.

Card Eligibility & Holds

Your card must show a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo (check individual agency notes above — not all accept Discover). Prepaid and gift cards aren't accepted at pickup. Expect a hold of $200–$500 above the estimated rental cost, depending on agency.

Credit Checks & Age Restrictions

Except for Dollar and Thrifty, most agencies run a credit check for debit card renters — failing it means denial at the counter. Renters under 25 generally can't rent on a debit card at traditional counters.

Residents & Vehicle Categories

Hawaii residents generally can't rent with a debit card on the island where they live. Standard policy limits debit rentals to Economy–Fullsize (Dollar & Thrifty extend this to Convertible, Premium, and SUV through our site).

Expert tip: Double-check your booked agency's current debit card requirements before departure, or contact our team at HawaiiCarRental.com — no counter surprises after a long flight.
